Trivia: The first film produced by the website 5secondfilms.com. Founded in 2008, creators of the site produced one 5 second film every weekday until 2013. This feature film is based on one such short, a fake trailer.
I saw this movie on Shudder the other day but was hesitant about watching it, having not seen the first two movies. However, there is no other movies. This series begins with the third movie. Created by the guys at 5 Second Films, a website who made weekly five second movies, is a horror slasher comedy spoof that is actually really funny! The characters do a great job of portraying California fraternity dude bros that are caught in the midst of a massacre by a villain known as mother face. The dialogue in this movie is especially a strength with some great quotable moments. And although it is a comedy spoof, they do a good job of including over the top blood and gore. Beyond just a dumb comedy, this movie is also an impressive dissection of the 1980s horror slasher genre that picks apart each cliche element. Oh, and it has some really funny commercial bits in between.
The movie takes place at my alma mater Chico State (Go Wildcats!). It is more and less a ninety minute long frat party with killings dispersed in between... in the best possible way. The story follows Brent who joins a fraternity to uncover who killed his twin brother Brock. After joining the fraternity they go on a cabin bro-out in the woods to bro-down. It is here that Mother Face, the villain who killed Brock and killed the fraternity members in flashbacks of Dude Bro Party Massacre 1 and 2, begins killing the frat members. Mother Face uses the frat boys' deepest fears to kill them one-by-one.
There is quite a bit of talent in this movie, considering it is a low-budget horror comedy spoof. The frat leader is played by Greg Sestero who infamously played Mark in The Room (...oh, hey Mark!). Andrew W.K., from early 2000s Party Hard fame, plays Rip Stick completely with his own theme intro. Patton Oswalt plays the police chief. And even Larry King is in the film as a coach who is almost immediately killed on screen. According to the trivia, King interviewed the "5 Second" guys and gave interest in wanting to be killed in a movie, to which they obliged. The rest of the cast is made up of the dozen or so writers from 5 Second Films. They make up a really fun collection of odd characters: There's Turbeaux who always tries to start trouble and is afraid of little dogs because they remind him of his hairy little dog weiner. There's Sizzler, the pledge who is forced to spend hours in the "beef box," a cardboard box meant as a jail until he "beefs." Then there's the partier guy who pisses himself when we first meet him, the guy that can't comprehend the twin situation, etc. The group of them remind me a lot of Broken Lizard.
I could get more into the specifics of the film, but you get the picture. The film does lose some of its magic after the first hour. It is hard to keep the premise and the jokes entertaining for that long. That being said, it is definitely worth a watch and really is a surprisingly good movie. Well acted, written, good score, and well shot. Grab an 18 pack of beer with your best bros and enjoy.
