Overview: I kept coming across this movie on Shudder and had heard high praise about it on the internet so I decided to give it a view. I was not sure what to expect, but I was really impressed by the film. Paranormal films are usually not my thing (Slasher fan through and through), but this one creates a really compelling story with genuinely scary moments. The director's pacing is what really makes the film so great. Demian Rugna knows how to use quiet and slow points to cause the viewer to drop their guard only to ratchet up the terror at those moments.

Trivia: An advertisement for the film was pulled from the video sharing site YouTube, as many users complained that the five second clip featuring a startling jumpscare was "too scary." Administrators thus removed the ad and apologized, claiming that it was not their intention to publish content that may potentially "offend" or "shock" viewers.


The Nun is the latest movie from the Conjuring franchise. First, I cannot believe how much money these movies make! Don't get me wrong, they are good films, but their widespread appeal is shocking. I saw this movie on the Friday after it came out and the audience boasts every type of person. We were seated next to three Hispanic ladies in their fifties who couldn't help but whisper to themselves "Dios mio" after every scare. There was the usual drunk college kids (it was a Friday night), families, older couples, etc. I don't know how producer James Wan and the production companies figured out how to market horror to the mainstream but they've done a remarkable job.

Trivia: In an interview, Alex Wolff explains that he wanted to actually break his own nose for the scene where his character slams his head into a desk. When it was time for the scene to be shot, Wolff slams his head into the desk only to discover that the top was foam and the bottom was hard. He dislocated his jaw (which is a previous injury the actor has had) for the scene.

I started this horror journey back in the beginning of July and when asking my friends what horror/scary movies I should watch the two that came up over and over were A Quiet Place and Hereditary. A Quiet Place was good but I think Hereditary is great. It is actually a legitimately scary movie! It's a slow burn so if you are planning on seeing it, give it patience, it more than pays off in the end.

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (SBSBOR) is one of those great movies that falls into that unique sub-genre of 1980s monster/slasher t-n-a films. It has an incredible 80s soundtrack that I'm going to try and find. A couple of songs by a band called ZOOM ZOOM really stand out. It has a couple good death scenes despite a next to nothing budget (IMDB guesses $90,000). But most importantly it stars the incredible Linnea Quigley (Night of the Demons, Return of the Living Dead) and George Buck Flowers (he plays a hobo/drunk in almost every 1980s movie... seriously, look at his IMDB credits).

Beyond the Gates (2016)

Beyond the Gates had all the makings of a really fun 80's/90's retro themed movie: A VHS horror game. A buddy comedy. 1980s credit font and music. However, the movie spend way too long on the family dynamics between the three main characters and not enough time playing the actual game.

The movie is about two brothers who are reunited after their father dies and they find a game called VHS Board Game that claims if they win by collecting four keys they will save their father's soul. The game involves the involuntary and voluntary killing of people close to them.
